Wood Wood Adds a Splash of Color to Artek's Stool 60
Coming in “Bothnia Blue,” “Factory Yellow” and “Powder Pink.”
If there was only one chair ever made, do you think it would be Alvar Aalto‘s Stool 60? The instantly-recognizable piece of Scandinavian furniture is self-described as “a seat, a table, storage unit, or display surface,” making it one of the most universal pieces one can own. Now, Wood Wood has gotten its hands on the Artek-produced pinnacle of functionalist furniture, giving the three-legged stool a crisp and colorful makeover.
Coming in three specially-developed colors — “Bothnia Blue,” “Factory Yellow” and “Powder Pink” – the stool naturally maintains its Finnish Birch wood structure, comprising of three L-shaped bent legs and a circular top. This design structure makes the Stool 60 perfect for stacking, as shown in Wood Wood’s editorial above, and it also shows how wood can be manipulated for the human form.
To keep the natural Birch look and feel, Wood Wood’s Brian SS Jensen settled on using linseed oil-based stains to allow the grain to show through the colors. Speaking on the project, Jensen said: “Although simple in appearance, the Stool 60 is actually an innovative, sophisticated piece of furniture. In Denmark, the stool was historically used across public spaces — so it’s always been perceived as a democratic, honest piece of furniture. To me, it’s a true design icon. For the W.W. edition, I wanted to show respect to the original form, and we experimented with more distinct color applications while preserving the beauty of the birch, which I think is an essential part of the Stool 60’s story.”
