Back in March 2020, Ken Miles’ original 1965 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R headed up Mecum‘s 33rd Original Spring Classic auction, and now it returns to the auction platform as part of its Kissimmee 2022 line-up.

This particular car is the first R-model built and was driven by Ken Miles in various races to compete against the likes of Ferrari, subsequently going on to inspire the film Ford v. Ferrari. Chassis number 5R002 belongs to this car and features unique attributes specific to this race-spec iteration, many of which allowed it to become not just one of the most significant Mustangs in the car’s history, but also in Shelby’s history as this car marked the brand’s first competitive racing win.

Everything that went into making this prototype a success on the track went on to encourage the designers to build 34 customer cars, however, none were built in the same configuration as 5R002. Finished in “Wimbledon White” with blue racing stripes, the car is offered in a relatively original condition featuring a 289-cubic-inch V8 that’s good for 306 BHP and 329 lb-ft of torque, a sparse yet timely retro interior, and plenty of racing-specific touches such as a roll cage, taped lights, harnesses, a fire extinguisher, and more.

Mecum Auctions expects the GT350R to fetch between $3,700,000 USD and $4,000,000 USD when it heads to auction from January 6-16, 2022.

In other news, Mercedes-Benz has made an EV concept that can deliver 620 miles on a single charge.
