Lil Nas X Returns to His Country Roots With Cover of Dolly Parton's "Jolene"
“This song is kind of like beautifully sad, you know?”
Hot on the heels of MONTERO‘s release, Lil Nas X dropped by BBC Rado 1’s Live Lounge on Tuesday to perform a cover of Dolly Parton‘s 1973 classic “Jolene.”
Singing into an iced-out microphone on a flower-wrapped stand, the “Old Town Road” vocalist proved his country prowess while appealing to the camera, “I’m begging of you please don’t take my man.”
Speaking on his decision to cover the track during the show, Lil Nas X explained, “I chose this because I feel like this song is kind of like beautifully sad, you know? I like the little twang, like the country twang in it. So I was like, ‘let me try this out.’”
The 22-year-old chart-topper then performed “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” along with “Dead Right Now” and “That’s What I Want” off of MONTERO.
According to HITS Daily Double, the album, which enlists features from Jack Harlow, Doja Cat, Elton John, Megan Thee Stallion and Miley Cyrus, is forecasted to earn between 130,000 and 140,000 equivalent album units in its first week. Lil Nas X will battle Drake‘s Certified Lover Boy, which just logged its second week at the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart, for the No. 1 spot.
