adidas has returned to one of its most popular tennis sneakers, bringing back the Barricade silhouette for a new generation. The sneaker made its debut in New York in 2000, and was eventually worn by a succession of Grand Slam winners. For the new release, adidas has mixed this heritage with performance features and elite athlete insights.

The Barricade has been designed with a focus on enhanced durability — through the use of abrasion resistant material on the forefoot and eyestay as well as ADIWEAR rubber compound on the outsole — and improved comfort. Extra comfort comes from a foam tongue, strategic vented cooling across the upper and GEOFIT sense pods around the heel.

The design of the shoe has seen elite tennis players such as Dominic Thiem and Maria Sakkari offer insights and testing. Announcing the launch, Sakkari said, “It’s no secret that modern tennis is faster than ever before. This means footwork is fundamental – you need stability, comfort, and control when moving around the court. This is why I was delighted when adidas asked me to contribute insight for the development of the new Barricade – an iconic tennis shoe that is innovated to the needs of the modern game. I look forward to wearing it this summer and hopefully making history together.”

In related news, adidas recently dressed its Predator football boots in EQT-themed colorways.
