Vans‘ quintessential checkerboard pattern has been one of the brand’s key design pieces since the late ’70s, and it’s been most prominently displayed on the Slip-On — a shoe first made famous by Sean Penn’s lovable slacker Spicoli in 1982’s Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Now, however, Vans is tweaking its classic checkerboard squares to create a new Slip-On dubbed the “Trapezoid.”
The new, trapezoidal pattern graces the shoe’s entire forefoot with a black and white print on the Slip-On’s canvas base. Where the forefoot meets the midfoot, things split wildly. Patterns give way to bright primary colors, with the left shoe’s rear half switching between red and green while the right shoe’s back side swaps between yellow and blue. For a dash of simplicity, each foot features a black suede heel overlay. The look is completed by white midsoles with a black foxing stripe.
Expect the Vans Slip-On “Trapezoid” to release in Japan exclusively at BILLY’s Tokyo come July 23. Its MSRP is set at ¥7,700 USD (approximately $70 USD), inclusive of tax, and pre-orders are open now.
