Rory McIlroy decided to cancel for “personal reasons” Wednesday’s pro-am event and press conference, as stated by Rex Hoggard from the Golf Channel. His absence from the scheduled pro-am at the Memorial Tournament Pro-Am and press conference comes in the same week that Grand Slam-winning tennis champion Naomi Osaka withdrew from the French Open.
The attributes of McIlroy’s reasoning remain uncertain, and the world’s number eight still has yet to explain his withdrawal on social media.
The four-time major golf champion ended an 18-month winless streak by taking home the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow. The Wells Fargo Championship was his first win in over a decade; however, he also experienced another major championship setback in his most recent start to the year. At the US PGA Championship at Kiawah Island, he tied for 49th. Personal life-wise, he and his wife Erica welcomed their first child, Poppy in September.
While Rory is one of the most famous players on the PGA Tour, he has garnered a reputation for speaking freely.
McIlroy is still set up to tee off at 1:44 PM EST today for round one at Muirfield Village, where his Top 10 finishes have come in nine career starts. Both Viktor Hovland and Adam Scott are set to join him on the tee.
In other golf news, the HYPEGOLF Invitational Miami brought style, music, and more onto the golf course.
