TAKE&SONS FW21 Breathes Life Into "Heavy Duty" Apparel With Artisanal Craft
Thoughtful garments inspired by Japan’s Americana craze.
Emerging label TAKE&SONS is looking to the good old days for its Fall/Winter 2021 collection. Steeped in the traditions of Japanese Americana, the lineup is rife with thoughtfully elevated takes on staple goods, transforming duck cloth jackets, fisherman vests and chore coats with a deep love of craft, infusing these humble “Heavy Duty” silhouettes with time-consuming craftsmanship.
A prime influence on TAKE&SONS’ designs, the concept of “Heavy Duty” clothing holds a special place in the history of Japanese menswear. As explained in great detail by W. David Marx’s seminal Ametora, the trend really took hold in the ’70s a little before the Ivy bug bit the nation. Heavy Duty was a style of clothing that drew from the garments worn by the outdoorsmen of the day — think cotton flannel shirts, mountain parkas and cotton twill chinos.
FW21 sees TAKE&SONS updating those ethos with a desire to bolster the durability and cuts of those garments, creating clothing as utilitarian as it is appreciably “cool.” This sentiment is realized by way of flowing wool ponchos, waxed canvas jackets and thick moleskin shirts. Relaxed A-line shapes also inform a crispy balmacaan coat, while camo-covered pullovers and bags draw from the realistic prints utilized by hunters of today. Throughout, painstaking attention to detail ensures that no stitch is out of place
