A new trailer and release date for Johnny Depp and Forest Whitaker‘s City of Lies has finally been released.
The crime drama sees Depp portray Russell Poole — the real retired LAPD detective — who works the homicide investigations of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls in 1997. He’s joined by a journalist named Jack (Whitaker), whose character is based on journalist and author Randall Sullivan, almost two decades after the murders in an attempt to track down who really killed the two rappers. The film is based on Sullivan’s 2002 non-fiction book LAbyrinth which is mainly comprised of the author’s interviews with Poole.
City of Lies was filmed between December 2016 and May 2017 and was originally titled LAbyrinth. It was scheduled for a September 2018 release but was postponed indefinitely due to legal troubles from Global Road Entertainment along with Depp and the film’s location manager. Saban Films eventually picked up the distribution rights for a wider premiere.
