Originally recorded back in 1984, Mariya Takeuchi‘s “Plastic Love” has found new life in recent years thanks to unofficial uploads on YouTube. Captivating a new generation with its evocative take on city pop, the track has now received a new official music video.

Additionally, Warner Music Japan recently re-issued the track in the form of a 12-inch single. The newfound popularity of “Plastic Love” helped the re-issue of the track break into Japan’s top ten sales chart for the first time. It is interesting to note that the first 12-inch single released in Japan, March 1985, only reached no.86 on the Japanese music charts, but the Variety album it was featured on was a hit.

The new official “Plastic Love” visual expresses the bubbly ’80s tune while highlighting the emotive nature of Japan’s night scenes. While perfectly matching the lyrics of the song that, according to Takeuchi, tells the story of a woman that has lost her true love and can’t help the loneliness of the loss created.
