Annie Leibovitz has been at the forefront of photography for nearly 50 years. Despite having an influential place in the realm of fashion, Leibovitz considers herself a storyteller above all. To accompany her forthcoming Phaidon publication, the photographer is showcasing a new solo exhibition with Hauser & Wirth Southhampton, titled “Wonderland.”

The presentation focuses on the last two decades of work from the acclaimed American photographer. From Vanity Fair to Vogue, Leibovitz used fashion merely as a platform to exchange ideas. Some of the narratives being told include images from her first couture shoot in Paris, featuring the likes of Kate Moss and Sean Combs; along with an homage to Lewis Carroll’s 1865 novel, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. In Leibovitz iteration, the photographer cast a number of influential figures to recreate the classic — Tom Ford as the White Rabbit, Natalia Vodianova as Alice and Jean Paul Gaultier as the Chesire Cat, amongst others.

Reflecting on the work, Leibovitz wrote, “Fashion plays a part in the scheme of everything, but photography always comes first for me. The photograph is the most important part. And photography is so big that it can encompass portraiture, reportage, family photographs, fashion.”

Wonderland is on view at Hauser & Wirth Southhampton until December 23, while the book is available to pre-order for $89.95 via Phaidon. The publication will release globally on November 17.
