Conan O'Brien Bids Farewell to Late Night With a Heartfelt Message
The celebrated talk show host will be moving over to HBO Max for a weekly variety show.
Conan O’Brien delivered a final emotional and humurous goodbye to his eponymous late night show on TBS.
Conan aired its final episode on June 24 and saw the talk show host sitting down on the rearranged stage, saying thank you to all the people who helped him along the way. He started by expressing his appreciation for TBS — the network he went to following his fallout with Jay Leno and NBC — the people on the show and his longtime friend and announcer Andy Richter, the latter causing both O’Brien and the audience to chance Richter’s name. O’Brien also named Lorne Michaels of SNL as the one who “put his credibility on the line” and convinced NBC to hire O’Brien, who was a writer on SNL, to replace David Letterman, and star Lisa Kudrow as the person who convinced him to take the job.
“I’ve devoted all of my adult life to pursuing this phantom intersection between smart and stupid,” O’Brien said. “There’s a lot of people that believe that the two can’t co-exist but I will tell you that when [they] come together, it’s the most beautiful thing in the world.”
O’Brien will be leaving late night after 28 years and moving to HBO Max, where he will host a weekly variety show.
