Mahalia & Ella Mai Set a Car Ablaze in Visual for "What You Did" (UPDATE)
Featuring an ode to Aaliyah’s profound style.
UPDATE (September 11, 2019): Following the release of her debut album, Love and Compromise, U.K. swooner Mahalia has returned with a fire-filled video for “What You Did” featuring Ella Mai. Directed by recurrent collaborator KC Locke, the new video sees both singer-songwriters remaining calm as they sing in an old Volvo surrounded by an intense blaze. They eventually leave the car, holding hands as they watch the vehicle burn. More scenes are intercut between the clips, whereby both artists can be seen prancing about in hallways in retro-tinged gear, with a black and white scene effectually flipping much of Aaliyah‘s profound style.

ORIGINAL STORY (September 5, 2019): Ahead of the release of her forthcoming project, Love and Compromise, UK-based R&B swooner Mahalia has tapped Ella Mai for a smooth new cut entitled “What You Did.” The track follows her previous single alongside Burna Boy, “Simmer.” The new single is the fifth from Mahalia’s forthcoming debut studio album and relishes in lyrical wordplay that speaks on an unfaithful relationship and its emotional aftermath. Production-wise the track samples Cam’ron and Juelz Santana‘s 2002 hit “Oh Boy,” taking on a soulfully-tinged sound that allows for both artists to billow their velvety vocals forward.
