Tkay Maidza Drops New Visual for "Awake" Featuring JPEGMAFIA
Inspired by insomnia and sleep-deprived thoughts.
Australian rapper Tkay Maidza recently enlisted Baltimore rapper JPEGMAFIA to trade verses on her latest track “Awake.”
Accompanied by an intense trap beat produced to sound like an alarm, “Awake” chronicles Maidza’s battle with insomnia during work. “I came up with the hook one night when I couldn’t sleep,” explains Tkay. “It was in the middle of the night of a writing trip where I was up late ’til at least 3am every night for a whole month. We flipped the track and made it about what I do whilst I’m not sleeping. Then JPEG came and took it to another dimension.”
Maidza begins by listing ways in which friends and family can contact her late into the night, as she’ll likely be awake anyways. She then trails off into her own tired thoughts, followed by a verse from JPEGMAFIA on a similar subject. The song’s accompanying music video encapsulates the claustrophobic feeling of sleep deprivation through dark visuals, strobe lights and shaky, unreliable camera movements.
