Directing such films as Badlands, The Thin Red Line and The Tree of Life, Terrence Malick has been known for his cinematic dramas that deal with themes like nature, individual transcendence and moral dilemmas. While the director has gotten really good at non-linear storytelling over the years, it appears Malick is switching things up this time as he devises a linear plotline for his upcoming film A HIDDEN LIFE.
Played by August Diehl, the film tells the story of Franz Jägerstätter, an Austrian conscientious objector who refused to fight for Hitler during World War II. Upon facing punishment and prison, Jägerstätter is confronted with questions about the implications of his protest and how it affects his family, who have been shunned by association. One part of the trailer shows Jägerstätter asking a priest, “If our leaders, if they are evil, what does one do?” It’s a drama that examines the conflict between inner morals, logic and human instinct, a complex topic that still feels relevant in today’s age.
