Balenciaga's Fall 2019 Lookbook Highlights Subversive Suiting
Anchored by chunky sneakers and square-toed loafers.
Debuted back in March, Balenciaga‘s Fall 2019 offering developed upon the sophisticated styling that debuted on the Spring/Summer 2019 runway, where Demna Gvasalia‘s over-the-top parodic designs evolved into toned-down tailoring. Dynamic shapes and courageous color-blocking is Balenciaga’s current priority, as evidenced by the label’s expansive Fall 2019 lookbook.
Balenciaga’s offerings have demonstrated Gvasalia and team’s knack for keeping ahead of the current zeitgeist, staying one step ahead of flighty trends by sticking to the brand’s distinctive design ethos, elevating slouchy shapes with precise silhouettes. Boxy blazers sport nipped waists and enormous shoulders trimmed with a vertical Balenciaga tag. These imposing cuts create an hourglass shape that gently contrasts against the relatively conventional bottoms, like pooling denim jeans and trim blackwatch plaid trousers. Trim pants stand out in stark contrast to Balenciaga’s signature billowing shapes, offering a stark contradiction to the familiar heft of the Track Trainers and Triple-S.
Chunky sweaters and patterned scarves lend warmth to the lightweight shirting and thin turtlenecks, with massive blanket-sized shawls emblazoned with the contemporary Balenciaga logo. Though the logo also appears on several pairs of square-toed loafers, the majority of the garments are relatively understated, with an emphasis on muted grey, navy, black and indigo that allows the bright yellow and blue items to obtain extra visual impact. Plaids of the muted and bold varieties also surface throughout, granting a retro edge that complements the tiny eyewear and washed-out denim.
