Marvel Studios and HBO have wrapped up some of the most acclaimed cinematic stories told this decade, and J.J. Abrams wants Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker to stick the landing. As such, his plan is to bring the characters in the saga to an ending that made perfect sense to fans.

In a new interview with Vanity Fair, the director talks about coming back into the Star Wars saga to finish what he started. “That’s the challenge of this movie. It wasn’t just to make one film that as a standalone experience would be thrilling, and scary, and emotional, and funny, but one that if you were to watch all nine of the films, you’d feel like, ‘Well, of course—that!,’” Abrams stated.

He also discusses why he uses practical effects for the Star Wars films, utilizing unused footage from The Force Awakens to bring back Carrie Fisher‘s General Leia, and how this film will serve as the conclusion to the Jedi Order-Sith conflict.

Daisy Ridley, who plays protagonist Rey, also spoke about her role in the film, as well as the first trailer released for the movie. “It’s nice having that shot at the beginning of the teaser,” Ridley said. “Because I think it’s quite a good visual representation of where she is now: confident, calm, less fearful.”
