For the latest entry in our Conversations With interview series, HYPEBEAST linked up with DaniLeigh to discuss the difference between being a dancer and being an artist, her viral Shiggy Challenge moment and meeting Prince.

When was DaniLeigh was 16 she moved to Los Angeles with her mother and little sister to follow her dreams of being a dancer and singer. She was part of a duo then, performing with a close friend under the moniker Curly Fryz. But the group broke up four years later. After going solo, Prince selected the then-18-year-old to direct and star in his 2013 music video “Breakfast Can Wait.” In late 2016, Tuo Clark, Senior VP A&R at Def Jam, heard beats by producer Yanni that DaniLeigh was singing on and the label signed the star soon after.

Dominican-American, South Florida native and rising star DaniLeigh had a tremendous 2018, led by her smash hit “Lil Bebe” and the remix featuring Lil Baby. The dancer turned artist released her debut album, The Plan, late in 2018 and has been our tour around the country. The difference between the dance world and music world is night and day, which Dani had to adjust to.

“It’s completely two different worlds; the checks are different,” DaniLeigh laughs. “Being a dancer is more chill, when I was dancing and I was on tour, I didn’t have to worry about half the stuff I got to worry about now. Now it’s different.”

Most recently, DaniLeigh dropped the Spanish remix to “Lil Bebe,” which features Nio García and Rauw Alejandro.
