Sevdaliza is one of those artist’s that never seizes to surprise her fans with new and improved material. The Dutch-Iranian artist is one of those individuals that continue to shroud her ethos in enough mystery to keep audiences craving for more. She’s mysteriously melancholic yet beautifully-poetic, a combination so powerful that she could be regarded as an amalgamation of Portishead, Björk, FKA twigs, and even Grimes. Her ability to channel R&B, trip-hop, and avant-pop sensibilities into one genre-defying exploration of her own artistry is enough to applaud, yet her execution in doing so makes her one of those artist’s that starkly stands out from the rest. Now she has returned with a brand new single and accompanying visual for “Martyr,” which explores a dark romantic relationship.

Shot in vintage horror movie-esque fashion, the video is completely grey scaled, layered with a split tone color filter that promotes the ambiguously pensive atmosphere of the track. Immensely layered instrumentation from string accompaniments, explosive drums, and well-articulated synths help in solidifying the trip-hop aspects of the track further, with Sevdaliza carrying through effortlessly with gorgeously-torqued vocals that poetically dish out her desolately-toned lyrics.

You can catch the video for “Martyr” above.

In case you missed it, Björk recently DJ’d at her old school’s dance.
