Netflix and Ava DuVernay have continued their ongoing partnership with When They See Us, a four-part series focusing on the so-called Central Park Five. Set to air on May 31, the series will cover a 25-year time period and tell the story of five Harlem teenagers who were arrested and imprisoned for a rape they didn’t commit in April 2019. Each of the Central Park Five spent between six and 13 years behind bars, before someone else confessed to the crime.

The trailer begins with a mother’s voiceover as her son gets ready to go out, before being arrested and held in a cell with four other teenagers. This is contrasted with a voiceover from another woman, seemingly telling the policy to “get an army of blue up in Harlem. You go into these projects and you stop every little thug you see.”

Launching the trailer, DuVernay added that the five teenagers are “not thugs. Not wilding. Not criminals. Not even the Central Park Five. They are Korey, Antron, Raymond, Yusef, Kevin. They are millions of young people of color who are blamed, judged and accused on sight.”

When They See Us was directed and co-written by DuVernay, who is also reportedly working on a Prince documentary for Netflix. The four-part series will feature appearances from Michael K. Williams, Vera Farmiga, John Leguizamo, Felicity Huffman, Niecy Nash, Blair Underwood, Christopher Jackson, Joshua Jackson amongst others. Take a look at the trailer above.

In related news, Finn Wolfhard & Carrie Coon could star in the next Ghostbusters.
