Jordan Peele's 'Us' Remix of Luniz's Iconic "I Got 5 on It" Has Arrived
A “tethered mix” from Michael Marshall.
With early reviews heralding Us as a “masterpiece,” Jordan Peele and his team have finally liberated the uniquely-haunting “I Got 5 on It” rework that guided the film’s lead trailer. Specifically, this new take on the Luniz classic is being released as a “tethered mix” from Michael Marshall, the original vocalist behind the record’s iconic hook.
Marshall’s new “I Got 5 on It” remix stands as one of our first tastes of the official Us soundtrack, which also boasts contributions from composer Michael Abels, Minnie Riperton and Janelle Monae. Luniz’s original version was released and certified platinum in 1995 and later received a legendary remix from a “who’s who” of Bay Area all-stars; E-40, Dru Down, Shock G, Spice 1 and Richie Rich all stepped in to deliver new verses on the aforementioned rework.
“I love songs that have a great feeling but also have a haunting element to them and I feel like the beat in that song has this inherent cryptic energy,” Jordan Peele shared at the end of last year, explaining why he chose to use Luniz’s “I Got 5 on It” for the first Us teaser. “It’s just a dope song.”
