David Zwirner will launch an online sale of archival pieces by legendary American cartoonist and past Supreme collaborator, R. Crumb. Entitled “R. Crumb: Mr. Natural and Drawings from the 1960s,” the sale will feature a rare selection of sketchbook pages and works on paper made by the artist nearly six decades ago. “Since the 1960s, sketchbooks have been a mainstay of Crumb’s practice, serving as a repository for his thoughts, ideas, and obsessions,” said Zwirner.

The sale coincides with the New York City gallery’s physical retrospective called “Drawing for Print: Mind Fucks, Kultur Klashes, Pulp Fiction & Pulp Fact by the Illustrious R. Crumb.” Organized by authoritative art critic Robert Storr, the presentation highlights delicate works on paper alongside draws, and comics pulled directly from age-old publications. The exhibition is currently on view until April 13.

‘Drawing for Print: Mind Fucks, Kultur Klashes, Pulp Fiction & Pulp Fact by the Illustrious R. Crumb’ opens Thursday, February 21 from 6–8 PM at the gallery’s West 19th Street location. Curated by Robert Storr, this exhibition will feature a wide array of printed matter culled from the artist’s archive: tear sheets of drawings and comics, taken directly from the publications where the works first appeared, as well as related ephemera. The works on view showcase the full breadth of Crumb’s graphic production and creative vision and will be organized by Storr into groupings that visualize the artist’s mixture of frenetic creative output and his methodical and skilled execution. In conjunction with the exhibition, there will be a book signing with the artist on Saturday, February 23 at the 19th Street gallery from 2–3 PM. Crumb will be signing copies of his celebrated ‘Bible of Filth,’ published by @davidzwirnerbooks. _____ Pictured: Page from R. Crumb, Sketchbook, 1979–1981 © Robert Crumb, 1979–1981.
