FunPlus Phoenix Stomps G2 3-0 to Become the 2019 'League of Legends' World Champions
Becoming the second Chinese team to take home the Summoner’s Cup.
After an impressive Mid Season Invitational victory and dominating the LEC throughout the year, Europe’s G2 Esports suffered a crushing loss to China’s FunPlus Phoenix in the 2019 League of Legends World Champions grand final.
In the packed Accorhotels Arena in Paris, France, FunPlus Phoenix stunned the crowd with an impressive 3-0 stomp to become the second Chinese team in the row to take home the Summoner’s Cup. Other prizes for the team include a minimum of $834,375 USD prize money and a set of in-game skins to immortalize their achievement.
Originally believed to be a close final, FunPlus Phoenix kicked off the best of five series with a huge lead which they kept the whole game before shutting down G2 in 40 minutes. Despite the Paris crowd rallying behind them and putting up a good fight, G2 lost game two in just 25 minutes with game three finishing up at 30 minutes. FunPlus Phoenix showed their consistency and strong team dynamic was enough to control every moment in the series and make Europe’s hope G2 look ineffective overall.
In case you missed it, Riot Games also marked the League of Legends Worlds 2019 with its new music collective, True Damage.
