Vince Staples Ponders the Absurdity of Fame in New 'Prima Donna' Short Film
The young rapper completely subverts Hollywood’s microcosm.
Vince Staples’ short film for his latest Prima Donna EP is presumably a harrowing assemblage of Hollywood’s darker tendencies. Though, any one who has listened to the Californian rapper since his debut album Summertime ‘06 can tell you about the oozing hopelessness that overwhelms Staples’ lyrics and undoubtedly, this 10-minute visual for his covey of fresh tracks spews the same—albeit deliberate hip hop cliches. Thanks to the folks at Noisey, viewers can immerse themselves inside the chthonic world of fame and fortune conjured by the Def Jam signee. The clip starts off with a bobble-headed Staples shooting a music video with twerking tushes and then segues into the rapper hopping inside a cab to a sketchy hotel. Inside, Tupac Shakur and Amy Winehouse doppelgangers make brief appearances which only add to the rapper’s assumed thesis of how absurd stardom is.
