JAY-Z, Meek Mill, Jesse Williams, Chris Rock & More Speak on Masculinity in 'Footnotes for MaNyfaCedGod'
“We can’t go to a therapist. You crazy at that point.”
JAY-Z shared a video for “MaNyfaCedGod” on Friday, starring Lupita Nyong’o. Yesterday, the Roc Nation honcho dropped a documentary titled “Footnotes for MaNyfaCedGod,” which is part of the Neil Brennan-directed series which looks at the meaning behind each track on JAY’s 4:44 album. This video explores the theme of masculinity and patriarchy and features the likes of Anthony Anderson, Chris Rock, Trevor Noah, Jesse Williams, Meek Mill and more.
“We can’t go to a therapist. You crazy at that point. A psychiatrist? You crazy. No, you need help,” Jigga shares in the clip. “Three of your brothers are dead, your mother used to beat you, you need help. Someone needs to talk you through while you are feeling these feelings.”
“I think as we look at our relationships and we look at f*cking trying to be something for other people, specifically men, it’s this barrage of, ‘You gotta be the man in a relationship,’” Jesse Williams added. “What does that mean? Does that mean have courage? And courage to do what? Does that mean be a leader? Be a leader how? Does that mean be physically strong? Because the weakest people that I’ve met in my life have been physically strong men.”
