Drake Grants an 11-Year-Old Heart Transplant Patient's Birthday Wish
Sofia Sanchez calls Drake her “idol.”
Earlier this month, a Lurie’s Children’s Hospital patient named Sofia Sanchez quickly went viral for her own dance submission to the massively-successful social media campaign behind Drake‘s Scorpion single “In My Feelings.” Currently fighting a tough battle against cardiomyopathy, the 11-year-old’s birthday wish was to meet her “idol” Drake.
“Sofia Sanchez, from Downers Grove, will be 11 on August 18 and has been waiting for a new heart at Lurie Children’s for the past several weeks. She has two wishes for her birthday, to get her new heart and to meet her idol, Drake, who is performing Friday and Saturday at the United Center,” reads a caption posted to Sofia Sanchez and Lurie’s Chilren’s Hospital’s YouTube video. “In hopes of meeting him, she and her cousin performed the KiKi Dance down the hospital hallway tethered to her IV pump and taped a video message from her hospital bed asking him to visit her at Lurie Children’s.”
Now, as CBS Chicago reports, it looks like Drake has stepped in to grant his young fan’s wish. Taking to Instagram, Drake posted a photo that documents his meeting with Sanchez.
“Me and my love Sofia talking about Bieber and Owls and Basketball,” reads the aforementioned picture’s caption. Just a few weeks prior to their meeting, Sanchez underwent open heart surgery to connect “a mechanical pump that helps support the heart and blood flow in people with heart failure.”
