B.L.U.E. Mixes Modern & Traditional Elements In Kyoto Guest House
Updating a 100-year-old building.

Beijing-based firm B.L.U.E. Architecture Studio has mixed the old and the new for a new project in Kyoto, Japan. The space is located in a traditional-style house with a timber frame that was first built more than 100 years ago. The architects decided to keep as much of the original building as possible, while also updating the space with modern elements.
The more modern touches include a tunnel-like main entrance, which runs through the main house and into the courtyard. Elsewhere, new staircases have been added while modern bathrooms have been incorporated throughout. The courtyard and corridor walls are both used to showcase traditional Japanese items, once again framing the juxtaposition between old and new. Take a look through the house above.
