Facebook has developed a feature that allows the platform to guess whether you’re rich or poor based on your profile information. The social media network would take into account places you’ve traveled, your age, a generated estimate of your earnings, and household data to deduce which “socioeconomic group” you would fit in.

The idea was filed as a patent only two years ago but has only recently become public knowledge after its publication. Facebook says it could use this technology as an advertisement tool to increase awareness about products or services to online users. Since this is just a patent, there’s no telling if or when the technology will be brought into practical use. Stay tuned as the story develops. In other Facebook news, the social network’s traffic is down 50 million hours a day.
