In recent weeks, Dev Hynes has been pushing his latest project outside of Blood Orange. Known as VeilHymn, the act is a joint effort from Hynes and his close friend Bryndon Cook of Starchild & The New Romantic. The duo unveiled their debut single as VeilHymn with “Hymn,” a record released late last month. Now, Dev Hynes and Bryndon Cook have shared a visual for the aforementioned track. Taking us to Jamaica, VeilHymn drop off a Malia James-directed video for “Hymn.” Choreographed by Juri Onuki, the clip for the track was filmed over the course of two days spent in Kingston, Jamaica and features the city’s local residents as its actors. Citing inspiration from world-renowned photographer Malick Sidibe, Malia James explains:

“I’ve always been a massive fan of Malick Sidibé’s work and have wanted to pay tribute to him since his passing last year. Taking Dev and Bryndon’s ideas and merging my love of Sidibe, I wanted to explore the concept of creating a fictional, vintage time and place similar to the confident and carefree spirits that Sidibé has documented.”

Breaking down “Hymn” and its mission statement, VeilHymn’s Bryndon Cook tells RS:

“‘Hymn’ came out of our mutual love for music and collaboration. Nothing was forced — everything was easy and natural. We made a song to reflect that attitude of openness and positive self evaluation. One of the things I admire about working with him is his ability to always have a great idea of what needs to be in place to complete the picture, and get a feeling across.”
