Yesterday, a rumor was going around that Chance the Rapper was going to run for mayor of Chicago after the superstar tweeted a paraphrase of his line “they screaming Chano for mayor, I’m thinking maybe I should” before revealing that he was holding a press conference at Chicago’s City Hall. Instead, Chance announced today (Oct. 16) that he’s formally endorsing Amara Enyia for Mayor of Chicago, WLS-TV reports.

Something that should be noted is that Chance’s father, Ken Bennett, is supporting Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. Ken Bennett is a former top aide for outgoing Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and has served as Deputy Assistant to the President and Deputy Director of Presidential Personnel in the Obama Administration. He was also Illinois State Director when Obama was in the Senate. Watch Chance’s press conference above.

Chano has been a major fixture in the Chicago community over the years. He pledged $1 million USD to mental health services in Chicago earlier this month and in July, he also bought the previously defunct local news publication Chicagoist. In regards to the Chicagoist purchase, Chance plans on “bringing the people of Chicago an independent media outlet focused on amplifying diverse voices and content.”
