Ordinary Sketches Become Instant Masterpieces With "Vincent" A.I.
Turning a doodle into a Van Gogh using machine learning.
A team of ingenious engineers over at technology firm Cambridge Consultants has fabricated an A.I. machine that turns ordinary sketches into a digital art masterpiece. Dubbed “Vincent” after the legendary Van Gogh, the interactive software can generate iconic works of post-Renaissance art (works of Van Gogh, Cézanne, and Picasso) through a complex series of machine learning methods. As the user sketches, Vincent is able to recognize varying types of texture, color, and contrast to produce an exact replica of a particular painting.
“We’re exploring completely uncharted territory –- much of what makes Vincent tick was not known to the machine learning community just a year ago,” said Machine Learning Director Monty Barlow to Engadget. “By successfully combining different machine learning approaches … we’ve created something hugely interactive, taking the germ of a sketched idea and allowing the history of human art to run with it.”
