Helen Kirkum Editorial by The Salvages Showcases Her Wild Footwear Creations
“I look at the pieces and study the shapes, I start to build the trainers like a collage.”
E-commerce site The Salvages just produced an editorial on English designer Helen Kirkum, whose artwork is comprised of “Frankenstein”-ed footwear creations deconstructed and reconstructed again. The end results are barely recognizable and actually a statement to consumerism. “The project was really about our actions and responsibilities as consumers through footwear,” states Helen. “Trainers became a perfect symbol of the lifecycle of trends and brand driven commerce.” Helen continues to explain the shoes’ idea was meant to confuse through a bit of familiarity but then “rebel” against the common view of sneakers and their value, and instead harnessing their shapes and colors alone.
