Here Are All the Winners of the World's 50 Best Restaurants of 2017
New York City’s Eleven Madison Park takes number one.

The list for the World’s 50 Best Restaurants of 2017 has been revealed and last year’s top dog, Osteria Francescana helmed by Gucci-wearing chef Massimo Bottura has been dethroned by chef Daniel Humm’s Eleven Madison Park. Eleven Madison Park aka EMP is located in the heart of New York City’s Flatiron District and is the first U.S. restaurant to reach the top of the list since 2004, when Thomas Keller’s French Laundry in Napa Valley, California held it.
While the rankings and awards are an accomplishment for any chef to add to his or her resume, they have been criticized for favoring expensive tasting menus (a meal at EMP will run you $295 USD excluding drinks and tax) and for not being inclusive of women — only three spots (Arzak, Central and Cosme) are helmed by female chefs and they are all co-run by male chefs. Also, professionalism has been questioned as voters, about 1,500 food writers, chefs, restaurateurs and gastronomes, aren’t necessarily required to pay for their meals — usually food critics, including Michelin inspectors, are expected to stay anonymous to keep everything unbiased. Finally, no Asian, Australian, African or South American restaurants have ever won the title of World’s Best.
