The Importance of Television Title Sequences and the Legacy of Saul Bass
Which show has your favorite title sequence?
If you have a background in graphic design, you surely know about the revolutionary work of Saul Bass. Since 1955 when he created the opening sequence The Man With The Golden Arm, he went on to set the standard for motion graphics that appear before movies. However, in recent years it seems as if the importance placed on elegant title sequences has faded away. Thats not to say it has been completely forgotten, recent Netflix originals prove that amazing title sequences can still leave us mesmerized — even up to the finale in a binge-watched season. Whether it is the intimate eye-contact with inmates from Orange is the New Black, the cross-examination of rural locations and shadowy figures in True Detective, or even the drug-induced isolation felt by Bojack Horseman; these intro sequences are very important in setting the tone for a show. Check out the video above to see the influence that Saul Bass had on this art form, in hopes that more television shows will follow suit and take time to craft beautiful title sequences.
