COMME des GARÇONS Reinterprets the Silhouette in 2017 Fall Collection
Highlighting more than just clothing.
No stranger to challenging fashion norms and expectations, Rei Kawakubo decided to eschew the typical body form altogether for her fall ready-to-wear collection show in Paris. Models shuffled down the runway armless, with pieces highlighting bulbous lines that vaguely resembled reimagined dress forms. After the first set of abstract figures with curves in unusual places, it was clear that Kawakubo was not just exhibiting clothing, but rather an overarching perception redefining the female shape. Titled “The Future of Silhouette,” the variation of materials including recycled fabrics, insulation, paper bags and elegant lace, proved that Kawakubo constantly pushes boundaries in order to express her creativity and encourages audiences to think about fashion in a larger context. This unique artistic vision is perhaps why she is getting her own exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in May. Take a look at the collection in the gallery above.
