UNDERCOVER Presents an Otherworldly Collection for 2017 Fall
Jun Takahashi creates an imaginative utopia on the runway.
Following up to his 2017 fall menswear collection, which provided commentary on the current “brainwashed” generation, UNDERCOVER’s Jun Takahashi returns with another thought-provoking show in Paris for his latest ready-to-wear line. “In an ideal world, everybody would be equal,” he told Vogue backstage. This idea resulted in him creating his own society, complete with aristocrats, clergymen, and even animal-like creatures with butterfly-winged and feathery appendages emanating from their heads. Instead of focusing on the separation of classes, his utopia highlighted uniqueness in an eccentric and whimsical manner that the Japanese designer has gained a reputation for. However, to say that his style is predictable is anything but true, as evidenced by the extraordinary designs that advanced down the runway in part of a deliberate narrative.
Set to a soundtrack by Thom Yorke, ornate headdresses and exaggerated Bishop sleeves were layered with colorful knits and honeycomb pleated skirts. Details included tapestry-influenced textures, meticulously constructed jackets and belts with various insignia indicating the members’ role within the fictional world.
