Wrecked Ford Mustangs Get New Life as High-End Watches
One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
For Christian Mygh and Jonathan Kamstrup, the old adage of “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” has been flipped into their latest business endeavor’s mission statement. Repurposing wrecked Ford Mustang parts doomed to the junk yard, Mygh and Kamstrup have produced a new timepiece for their company REC Watches.
“Most people would just see a pile of metal, a ghost of a Mustang. We see something completely different – the soul of a car and a story that needs to be told. I’m not cutting up Mustangs. I’m bringing Mustangs that are beyond repair back to life as a watch,” explains Mygh.
Named after the World War II-era fighter plane the P-51 Mustang, the P51 watch is outfitted with a power dial that’s intended to replicate a fuel gauge and a hands, date and dial setup inspired by the legendary ride’s dashboard. Every watch sold to a consumer bears the vehicle identification number (VIN), production year and “classic design cues” of the Mustang it was made from. For the truly selective customer, REC Watches will even manufacture a completely new model from parts you choose to donate.
