KENZO's Latest Short Film Is a Surreal Look at Our Digital and Social Media Selves
Be careful what you wish for.
It wasn’t too long ago that KENZO released its Spike Jonze-directed “KENZO World” film starring a dance-crazed Margaret Qualley. Now Humberto Leon & Carol Lim continue their creative fervor with the brand’s 2016 fall/winter campaign in an all-new video titled “The Realest Real,” helmed by Portlandia‘s Carrie Brownstein. The short film is set in a surreal existence where our protagonist Abby, played by Laura Harrier, gets a “wish” she wrote on social media to come true. The result is that actress Natasha Lyonne becomes her mother in real life, and things don’t go as great as expected.
The whole clip feels like an episode from Twilight Zone or Black Mirror, and is a satirical commentary on how the internet, especially social media, has affected our lives. It also explores what happens when there are no more digital barriers between us and our favorite celebrity icons. Additionally, all the characters look extra sharp and sophisticated in KENZO gear, which conveniently matches the tone of the themes presented.
