When the NFL season kicks off this fall, football fans will be able to tune into the Thursday night games on Twitter thanks to the social media platform’s landmark deal with the league. Up until now, though, little has been known about how exactly the streaming would work and how it would differ from the likes of ESPN’s own WatchESPN. Now, however, we may have a better idea of what to expect in the months ahead as Twitter has officially launched live sports streaming with day 9 of Wimbledon 2016.
So how does it work? The setup essentially comes in the form of a dedicated “Live” page that not only includes the streaming video, but features related Twitter accounts underneath — in this case, Wimbeldon’s official account — and related Tweets below that as users react to the goings-on in realtime. It remains to be seen whether or not the format will be tweaked at all for the NFL, but you can probably expect the teams’ official Twitter accounts and perhaps even individual player and coach accounts to appear on the page as well.
Check it out for yourself now.
