Terence Malick Wants You to Experience the Birth and Death of the Universe in New Film
As narrated by Brad Pitt.
Terence Malick’s ambitious storytelling stuns and stymies in equal measure: 2011’s Tree of Life famously features lengthy, prehistoric interludes of dinosaurs and the formation of the universe; the cinematic experience of a Malick film, while esoteric, is always visually captivating and polarizing.
The trailer for Malick’s upcoming film, Voyage of Time, promises more of the same. As far as a synopsis goes, the film tells the story of the birth and death of the universe, featuring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett as narrators. As far as aesthetics are concerned, Voyage of Time looks like a mix of Carl Sagan’s Cosmos and David Attenborough’s Planet Earth as narrated by Tyler Durden.
The film is a labor of love: Malick has spent 30 years filming the piece on large-format cameras, leaving entire historical narratives on the cutting-room floor to focus on the literal and figurative bigger picture.
