Junya Watanabe stepped into the shoes of Yugoslav filmmaker, Emir Kusturica, to recently offer a rapturous runway story in Paris. Evocative of Kusturica’s cockeyed film, Black Cat, White Cat, the renowned Japanese fashion designer’s warm season lineup features motifs and silhouettes that channel the movie’s cheerfully whimsical vibe. A bevy of heavily tattooed models don floral camp shirts, swanky porkpie hats, slim blazers and patchwork jackets. As a whole, the Rei Kawakubo protégé exhausts the “Retro Gangsters” theme in a manner that only solidifies his modish archetype.
