Only a few short days have passed since Sunday night’s Game of Thrones season finale left fans with their jaws on the ground. Now comes another big shock: David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have made it official, fans can expect only two more seasons and 13 total episodes left in the series. Confirming to Deadline, Benioff stated “It’s two more seasons we’re talking about. From pretty close to the beginning, we talked about doing this in 70-75 hours, and that’s what we’ll end up with. Call it 73 for now.”
This means the final two seasons will break away from the standard 10 episodes, and most likely split into seven episodes in 2017’s Season 7 & and a final six in 2018’s Season 8. With the news of shorter seasons and an end in sight may be bad news to fans, it’s not all doom and gloom. “It’s not just trying to outstay your welcome. We’re trying to tell one cohesive story with a beginning, middle and end,” Benioff replied.
What fans can expect in the upcoming seasons (along with a higher visual effects budget), Benioff spilled, “Daenerys is finally coming back to Westeros, Jon Snow is king of the North and Cersei is sitting on the Iron Throne. And we know the Night King is up there, waiting for all of them.” He continued, “The pieces are on the board now. Some of the pieces have been removed from the board and we are heading toward the end game.”
