Le Bon Marché Taps Ai Weiwei for "Er Xi" Installation
The Chinese artist brings his work to the French department store.

Ever since artist and dissident, Ai Weiwei, got his passport back from Chinese authorities, he has wasted no time in traveling the world. Having been barred from leaving China for the past four years, Ai Weiwei has been spending time in European countries such as Greece and the UK. Now, Ai finds himself in Paris completing an installation for high-end department store Le Bon Marché. The giant installation is called “Er Xi” (Child’s Play) and is inspired by the Chinese collection of epic tales entitled Classic of Mountains and Seas. Utilizing a traditional kite-building technique, Ai’s team has built enormous versions of these mythical characters, with the main piece being a dragon comprised of woven bamboo. Check out more photos of the installation on his Instagram, which officially opens on January 16.
