Essentials: 'Southpaw' | Shady Records With Jake Gyllenhaal & Eminem
“Believe in Hope.”

From acclaimed director of Training Day and The Equalizer comes Antoine Fuqua’s newest tour-de-force motion picture Southpaw. The film, starring Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal and soundtrack by multi-Grammy award winner Eminem, follows the story of reigning Junior Middleweight Champion Billy “The Great” Hope. At the peak of his success, one single tragic moment sends him on a downward spiral of guilt and despair. He then must pick himself up and make a comeback, both in life and in the ring, with the help of a broken down former boxer and the dire motivation to get his daughter back.
This edition of Essentials takes a look into the behind the scenes of the upcoming drama, with Jake Gyllenhaal and Eminem participating themselves. Some choice items include Marshall’s lyrical inspiration notepad, a highly coveted item ever since his days in Detroit. A Distinct Life x Shady Records Special Edition Beats Pill helps pump out the tunes on set, while costars Rachel McAdams and Forest Whitaker look over the film’s finalized script, also included above. Jake provides us with his props from the film, including the actual set of boxing gloves and jump rope which he trained with both on-set and off. A mini Southpaw glove keychain is displayed as well as “a constant reminder to fear no man.” While the genuine props above are not for sale, the official merchandise is available online for purchase here.
Southpaw is in theaters now.
