It’s been less than a week since The Avengers: Age of Ultron’s opening weekend, but we’re already shifting our gaze towards the last two planned installments in the mega-Marvel franchise. The last film is slated to be split into two — The Avengers: Infinity War Parts 1 & 2, and will be the first films to ever be shot exclusively and entirely in IMAX. As Joss Whedon (who helmed the first two installments) has stepped down, the new directors, Anthony and Joe Russo will begin filming with a lighter, 2D digital camera from IMAX, which was also used to film 15 minutes of the upcoming Captain America: Civil War. Previously, films have only used the technology for key scenes, such as in Interstellar (who set a record filming more than an hour of footage with the technology), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. According to IMAX Entertainment CEO Greg Foster, “the Russos are going to spend the next 15 months or so designing the making of the Avengers films with these cameras in mind. They’re not looking at this a week before they start filming or only focusing on an important section of the film. This is something that’s never happened before.” This inevitably marks a change in the film industry, with more big-budget movies shifting towards more modern filming formats such as IMAX. The last two Avengers films are slated for release May 4, 2018 (Part 1) and May 3, 2019 (Part 2).
