Announced today, YouTube has confirmed plans to roll out an ad-free subscription-based service for a monthly fee. Detailed in an email to YouTube partners, the new terms will go into effect June 15 and requires YouTube’s content creators to agree to updated terms for the monetization option. YouTube’s updated Partner Program Terms will pay creators 55 percent of the total net revenues from subscription fees, which is the same amount creators get from advertising revenue. The monthly subscription system will attract mobile viewers (making up half of all watch time) who would be interested in an interruption-free viewing experience much like Netflix. Although the terms of agreement changes go into effect June 15, it doesn’t necessarily mean the option will be offered to viewers immediately, nor has pricing details of the subscription service been released yet.
