It’s one of the industry’s best-(un)kept secrets. Apple and Beats Music are working on a new streaming service to rival Spotify. The New York Times has now published an article that sheds a little bit more light on the current developments regarding this matter. One year after acquiring Beats for $3 billion, the Silicon Valley giant is working with Beats engineers and executives to introduce its own subscription streaming service which will feature an enhanced version of iTunes Radio. Expected for arrival later this year, the new app is set to include features that were included in the Beats Music streaming service including curated playlists. Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor, who was the chief creative officer for Beats, “is playing a major role in redesigning the music app.”
Don’t expect the new streaming service to have a lower price than other services. Apple tried to persuade record labels to agree to lower licensing costs if they could sell subscriptions for the streaming service for $8 per month. However, the talks fell through. It’s also been reported that the name “Beats Music” will be scrapped. Last month, news arrived that Apple has recently hired BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe. Stay tuned.
