In a desperate move to combat poor music sales, the recording industry has decided to change the new release date for albums from Tuesday to Friday. You may or may not know that album release dates are different in different regions, so, Mondays for people in the UK, Tuesdays in the U.S., and Fridays in Germany. If the change goes through, it will allow all music consumers to receive new music at the same time instead of one region before another, lessening the initiative to pirate. The altered release date will also align with traffic spikes in sales, which is usually higher on Fridays and Saturdays. Not everyone is on board with this change, however, as Martin Millis, founder of Beggar’s Group believes the change will “lead to a market in which the mainstream dominates, and the niche, which can be tomorrow’s mainstream, is further marginalized.” The change seems amicable as digital music downloaders are usually looking for new tunes to spice up their weekend. What do you think, will you embrace the change?
