20th Anniversary PS4 00001 Model Sold for $130,000 USD

To mark the 20th anniversary of the original PlayStation, Sony has released 12,300 PlayStation 4s in the original PlayStation gray. The limited edition consoles are regularly priced at $615 USD — with the exception of the first production model with serial code 00001, which was put on auction in Japan. The winning bid for the console was ¥15,135,000 JPY (approximately $129,000 USD). The price was unexpected even to Sony employees as one representative told The Wall Street Journal “we appreciate all who participated in the auction and are surprised at the highest bid price, which was higher than our expectations.” Although some may think it’s absurd to pay such a steep price, the bid may seem more sensible knowing all proceeds go towards Save the Children Japan.
