When Michael Jordan revealed that Jordan Brand would be venturing into areas of sport other than basketball, it came as a surprise to many. However, slowly but surely, consumers have come to terms with the expansion and thus we have seen the sporting giant move into racing, baseball and subsequently football, golf, and skateboarding. Now that the Nike Zoom Vapor 9 Tour AJ3 has released – a product of two sporting greats coming together and mashing up their signature shoes — we think about all the other possibilities in areas which could be considered sports. This notion isn’t exactly farfetched as Jordan mentioned previously that the racing market would potentially be a part of the brand’s identity at some point. Furthermore, he revealed how he thinks touching on new areas shows the versatility of the brand and how it is uniform with Nike‘s philosophies in terms of innovation and designing products that meets certain athletic needs.
Some may not enjoy seeing the brand encompass sports that are remote from basketball and some may think it is ludicrous, but what must be maintained is that the company is indeed a representation of one of the greatest athletes of all time. At the end of the day Jordan Brand embodies the essence of Michael Jordan — the epitome of hard work and dedication to sport, so why can’t they venture into other territories if the goal is to provide athletes with the best products?
Although many are still drawn towards the infamous Jordan Brand basketball and retro affiliations, the question is, is it the right move for Jordan Brand to step into new sports categories and diversify?
