Citing Gareth Pugh, Romain Kremer and Damir Doma as his influences, Alex Mattsson is a young designer emerging out of London’s vibrant fashion scene. Moving to the capital to pursuit his talent, Mattsson graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2009 and has since exhibited work at London Collections: Men, starting with his debut in Fall/Winter 2011. Admittedly a fan of bright pastels and baggy attires, there’s a retro disposition in Mattsson’s work that’s reminiscent of the golden years of hip-hop. Yet the use of technical fabrics — cut and sewed in abstract ways — and outlandish embellishments provide examples of Mattsson’s wild imagination. Drawing inspiration from alien conspiracy theories, military and rebellious subcultures, the Scandinavian designer continues to marvel his audience with bold motifs, some of which is evident in his Essentials. Camouflage Short Dungarees are paired with Alex Mattsson x Caterpillar All White Boots, while a selection of vintage jewelry from The Great Frog and the like show Mattsson’s affinity for well-made pieces.
